Obituary of Dr. Eleanor Jeanne Louise Deinum
Eleanor Jeanne Louise Deinum M.D. F.R.C.P. (C)
It is with great sadness that we announce that our beloved Aunt Jeanne has passed away on Wednesday, June 7, 2017 in London at the age of 84. Born in Blenheim, Ontario on June 24, 1932, she graduated in Medicine from the University of Western Ontario in 1955 and interned at Victoria Hospital in London. She completed her psychiatric training at the University of Toronto and was probably the first woman in Canada to earn her Fellowship in Psychiatry from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. Aunt Jeanne joined the staff of the London Psychiatric Hospital in 1956 and served as Medical Director from 1978 to 1983. She also was a Clinical Associate Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at U.W.O. Following her retirement in 2002, she did volunteer work in the Geriatric Department at Parkwood Hospital for eleven years. Aunt Jeanne enjoyed theatre and opera; she also travelled extensively, and visited 259 countries on the Travelers’ Century Club list. She was predeceased by three brothers, Henry, Dirk and John and is survived by her sister, Elizabeth Landrum, sister-in-law, Helen Deinum MacPhail and by several nieces and nephews and their families. Cremation has taken place and there will be no funeral or visitation. A private family interment at Elmdale Memorial Park Cemetery in St. Thomas will be held at a later date.
